Sorana Survives Romanian Test
06.15.09
Fourth-seeded Sorana Cirstea advanced today to the second round at the Ordina Open.
World No.27 Cirstea, who made headlines when she beat Jelena Jankovic on her way to the last eight at Roland Garros, squandered a first-set lead against unorthodox Monica Niculescu but regrouped to post a 57 63 63 victory over her 63rd-ranked compatriot and occasional doubles tennis partner.
“I thought I wouldn’t get on court today, but suddenly the rain stopped and the sun was out,” Cirstea said. “It was tough to play against another Romanian, we’ve played so many times and know so much about each others’ games. I am happy I went through, and hopefully next round I can play better tennis.”
